Speedtest CLI which we’ll be using on this tutorial is based on Python and you’ll also need wget command enabled on the server. All our VPS Servers and Dedicated Servers come with Python and Wget pre-installed. By any chance, if your server isn’t having Python or Wget installed, execute the following command:

yum install -y python
sudo yum install wget

And by now, you’ll have both Python and Wget components installed on your server. Now, using the Wget component, we’re going to download Ookla’s Speedtest CLI.

Note: Ookla is the finest internet speed test tool available in the market as of now and that’s why I prefer to use it. I personally won’t be recommending any of our users to use any other speed test tools as most of them in the market are inaccurate.

Now, Downloading the Speedtest CLI:

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py

The downloaded python script has to be executable. So, run the following command to make it executable:

chmod +x speedtest.py

Now, You have Speedtest CLI installed on your CentOS server. Whenever you need to run a speed test, you can run the following commands.

Note: The first command can be used to see the speed test result in CLI and if you need to share the speed test result in image format to your colleague or client, you need to run the second command and copy-paste the URL in the browser.

./speedtest.py

OR

./speedtest.py --share
